I remember watching the movie about Jim Jones and being oblivious to the implications. I remember watching a movie about another cult and it didn't affect me at all. And this was even after I had begun to have doubts. I read anti-Scientology websites and it was barely a blip on the radar. It wasn't until the WTS sued Quotes that it all came together.
"What elephant?" indeed.

The story of my life (part 7- Bethel, the end)
by onacruse inya know, it's odd how the "big" things just sometimes seem to bounce off your forehead, rather like seeing the trees instead of the forest.
well, fwiw, that was the state of mind (if you can call it that) i was in, after less than a year at bethel.
i was reassigned to the night-shift janitorial crew.

I confess that I have nothing to confess. I'm perfect as I am. And humble too!

JWs picking and choosing which rules to follow
by kristyann indoes anyone else find that many, many jehovah's witnesses pick and choose which rules they want to follow?
my boyfriend's parents are jws and i have many, many examples to share with you!
i'd love to hear if any of you have known of similar type things, or if you know any other rules that jws commonly break.

For all but the last, so what? Good for them!
As for the last, that's entirely in line with JW teaching. Spare the rod, spoil the child. Don't abuse your kids? Meh. Given all the abuse stories, particularly where the abuser was an elder, that doesn't seem to be a rule at all. -

My biggest excuse was "It's not the organization, it's the people in it"

MYTHICAL CREATURES IN ANCIENT TIMES
by Mary indid dragons and the phoenix really exist or were they just mythical creatures?
the dragon is of course, mentioned in revelation and is symbolic, but it's mentioned so often in other old writings, that i'm not sure if they just went extinct or what.
i was reading 1 clements earlier (written around 95 ce) and it specifically mentions the phoenix as living in arabia (below)
